Foodie Lorna Spacey takes the traditional toffee apple and gives it an Amajoya twist, plus healthy toppings.
Toffee apples have got to be one of the most nostalgic treats on the planet. We remember getting these at the circus and having loads at birthday parties – although as children we only managed to get through half before running off to the jumping castle again! Not only is the cooler weather perfect for toffee apples, since they have a delicious autumn feel, but they make perfect Halloween treats too, so be sure to dig out this toffee apple recipe in October too. They also work really well for kids’ birthday parties.
Now, we know traditional toffee apples can be a little tough on the teeth, so we asked Lorna to come up with a recipe that ensures a more sticky, chewy texture on the outside rather than that layer of hardened sugar we all remember from yesteryear. She also rolled them in healthy toppings. What a win!
Sticky Toffee Apple Recipe
Makes 4
Prep time: 30 minutes | Cooking time: 15 minutes | Total time: 45 minutes
Ingredients:
- 200g Amajoya Original Creamy Toffee, wrappers removed
- 4 organic Granny Smith apples or apples of choice
- 1 tbsp milk or water
Healthy toppings:
- ¼ cup chai seeds
- ¼ cup chopped nuts of choice
- ¼ cup buckwheat
- ¼ cup desiccated coconut
Method:
- Pour some boiling water in a large heatproof bowl and submerge the apples for 10-15 seconds to remove the wax. Remove and wipe down each apple with kitchen towel ensuring they are completely dry.
- Gently twist out the stem and insert a wooden skewer until it almost reaches the other side of the apple. Set aside.
- Melt the Amajoya Original Toffee with 1 tablespoon of milk or water in a small saucepan over a low heat until smooth, stirring every now and then.
- Once the toffee is smooth and creamy, gently dip and twist the apples while holding the saucepan at an angle to ensure the entire apple is coasted.
- Remove and keep twisting as the toffee sets with the assistance of a wooden spoon to smooth off any extra toffee as you don’t want this to be too thick.
- Roll into toppings and allow to set upright in a sturdy glass jar or place them down on a tray with wax paper.

- Use Amajoya Creamy Toffee Milk Éclair for a chocolate twist, or a mix of both toffees for some contrast.
- Use a variety of apples: Pink Lady apples are great if you are looking for a sweeter version.
